I mentioned in an earlier post how the water in the fish tank was turning greenish. Well, the problem continued for another few weeks, until I decided to evaluate what I might be doing wrong. After researching many fish blogs and fish tank articles, I figured I was feeding my fish too much. I cut back on the amount of food and after a few days, my tank started to clear up.

I found out my fish were pooping too much and the bacteria couldn't keep up with the waste. After limiting their food intake, they produced less waste and didn't create so much extra algae. I'm finally happy to say that the tank is clear and looks great!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11931557791841923904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868312446745343657.post-10995070681116952372016-04-22T13:00:00.000-07:002016-04-30T13:13:53.504-07:00Week 14 ReadingThis week's reading is the final chapter in Katie Paine's "Measure What Matters". It discusses how to measure nonprofit communications efforts, specifically in higher education. It discusses how everyone involved with a collegw is considered an important audience. From locals to alumi, those who have some steak of interesnt in a school should be considered an audience.

Katie Paine gives five steps to creating better measurement:

Identify and prioritize your audiences

Define your objectives and get everyone on the same page

Establish a benchmark

Pick a measurement tool and collect data

Analyze the data, gain insight, make changes and measure again

At Petco I noticed a freezer with pet food in it. After asking the store clerk, they said fish and turtles love these frozen blood worms. The worms are easy to plop in the water and feed to fish. The worms don't even defrost before my fish and turtle begin feasting. The worms come in small blocks and are just enough for all of my fish and turtle to eat within two minutes. Its fun seeing how excited they get for the worms. They like their dry fish food, but definitely not as much as the worms.

If you have any fish I'd completely recommend buying some for your fish. This is a treat for them, but also a meal substitute. I like to feed them worms every other meal, so they don't get too used to eating them.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11931557791841923904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868312446745343657.post-16278850198321396372016-04-20T11:58:00.000-07:002016-04-30T13:14:30.523-07:00Week 14 PRAny social media class can't ignore the social media giant, Twitter. Professionals have taken to Twitter to not just engage customers, but other professionals. It's not as segmented or private as LinkedIn connections, but there's a constant stream of data pouring in about PR. Any industry is on Twitter. Hashtags allow others to search and find feeds relevant to their interests.

Although hashtags are misused and made fun of, they are still a viable tool that allows users to connect interests. Data is more easily shared and it gives a category to what people are sharing. I think professionals using Twitter and its hashtags is a wonderful thing and I hope it doesn't go away any time soon.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11931557791841923904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868312446745343657.post-91342071626672940712016-04-11T19:29:00.000-07:002016-04-11T20:08:25.338-07:00Week 13 BlogI've been writing too many meat recipes so this week I'll go somewhat veggie. When I was at Le Cordon Bleu this recipe was one of my favorites. It surprised me with its wholesome flavor and healthy ingredients. I had never heard of the dish before I tried it, which happened quite often due to my inexperience at the time. If I ever have to cook a cheap, healthy and flavorful meal I'll turn to this week's recipe. I present, White Bean Fagioli.
I recently went to Olive Garden and took advantage of their endless soup and salad deal. I was impressed that they offered fagioli as an option. I had to try it since I've only tasted my own recipe. I was disappointed with the lack of flavor and watery consistent, but hey, I wasn't surprised. It was from Olive Garden, the McDonalds of Italian Food. If you have ever tried it and felt that something was missing, I recommend you try the recipe for yourself. The fresh foods used are incomparable to McOlive Garden canned ingredients.

I left out a few ingredients that were unneeded and mixed weirdly together. Basil and rosemary are too pundgent of flavors, especially with beans and pasta. Rosemary always reminds me of Thanksgiving, which I'm not going for here. I'm aiming for a taste that makes you feel like your enjoying a cool Fall day in the countryside of Italy.

Other than the unneeded herbs, I didn't use much of the vegetable stock. If your dish is dry then you should add the stock. Please, don't make the mistake of adding salt and pepper to the onions. Salt from the canned beans may overwhelm the recipe. Also if parmesan is used to garnish, it will add a salty flavor to the meal. Seasoning too early could put the entire dish at risk, so I'd stick to the culinary rule of seasoning just before serving.

This is a wonderful recipe that actually calls for too much flavor. Flavor is great, but can be overwhelming when not mixed correctly. Using the adjustments I made will keep the dishes flavor balanced and whole.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11931557791841923904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868312446745343657.post-90725436068669242252016-04-10T19:37:00.000-07:002016-04-11T20:08:35.365-07:00Week 13 PR LifeThis week I created a Twitter account under @STEIN_PR. The chapter is useful to me not that I'm doing this blog ad wondering how I can better segment my data to my readers.

The author wrote that we must search for blogs that mention you or your marketplace most frequently. In order to do this we can make a spreadsheet of relevant mentions of a company. Another way is to verify that the blogs and bloggers are important. After analyzing blog mentions, ranking should occur. It's important to know how often the influencers are quoted. Blog Grader and Twitalyzer scores are tools to help analyze and rate blogs.

The author gave relevant and helpful suggestions for blogging tool. I hope to try these both out and see how they could help me analyze my traffic data.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11931557791841923904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868312446745343657.post-71500796728672131502016-04-07T12:48:00.000-07:002016-04-30T13:13:22.342-07:00Week 12 ReadingThis week, Katie Paine discussed how key influences may be used to present and support company products. Having a blogger try a product and write a review is a means to share content online. This is a way Apple has created such loyal customers. Now you may think, why pita bread with hummus? Well it was a luncheon at an Indian food restaurant. This was unique because my firm was pitching to their chef how we can bring catering business to theirs. While speaking personally with the chef, he ended up giving me a recipe for his family's favorite pita. That's why I'm sharing one of my favorite ethnic and somewhat-healthy hummus loving recipes, Pita Bread.

Pita bread is a great addition to almost any meal. If I'm trying to impress someone or am really feeling Mediterranean I'll go the extra mile and make a large batch. Just be aware, that you will have leftovers, not a bad thing.

The hardest part of making pita is cooking it. Using a mixer makes working the dough easy. Don't knead for more than 5-7 minutes so the gluten won't get too firm. I knead in increments of 1 or 2 minutes, or until the ingredients come together and the dough starts to firm.

If you feel you have more dough than you need, it's alright to freeze some of it. Any dough or bread frozen won't ruin the flavor or texture. Bread is one of the few things that I'm absolutely comfortable with freezing.

If a flat pita rather than puffy is wanted, I'd recommend pressing down on the dough while it cooks on the skillet. Using a towel to push down will save you from burns.

Drinking is the fun part, but the food is what we look most forward to. One of their favorite dishes that I make is so scrumptious that it's always the first to be gone. I learned about it from a local tapas restaurant that would serve it only for lunch. This week I present one of my favorite recipes, Bacon-wrapped Dates.

The mix of bacon, cheese and dates flavors is sometimes overwhelming. A mix of smokey, sweet and nutty flavors send your taste-buds to the moon and back. Stuffing and wrapping is the most time-consuming part of the recipe. If put together well and cooked right, this dish is a guarantee hit at any party.

The recipes calls for Parmigiano-Reggiano to be stuffed in the dates. I usually substitute it with almond butter and use the cheese as garnish. If stuffing dates with almond butter be careful in preparation. As long as it doesn't touch the pan, or run off into the pan, there won't be any charring or burning.

When wrapping the dates, use toothpicks to keep the wrap tight. It'll also be an easy way for guests to pick up and eat the little delicacies.

I decided to teach the world how to properly cook a hard boiled egg. The funny thing about hard boiled eggs is they are sometime hard to cook. It's all about getting the whites and yolk to coagulate without creating a grey flesh near the yolk. If you see any grey, you know you overcooked your eggs.

I enjoyed this project because I like video editing. I enjoy taking a story and engaging an audience through sight and sound. I usually engage through written content and rarely infographics, but when video is involved, I geek out.

If you would like to see the video check it out on my YouTube channel.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11931557791841923904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868312446745343657.post-46973302060838087972016-04-01T11:59:00.000-07:002016-04-30T13:16:39.482-07:00Week 11 ReadingReading "Measure What Matters" this week brought attention to how virtual events are being shaped by social media. Bringing audiences with similar interests through virtual conferences on platforms like Twitter. These virutal gathering create conversation and spark engagement for various industries.

The author also discussed how to develop a measurement plan. Step by step, Paine listed and defined how to achieve success in each step. The seven steps are a walk-through of how to achieve a company goal. It gives professionals a checklist that will better align what needs to be done and the actions needed to be taken. Here are the seven steps:
The water seems to be dirty and I didn't know why at first. I went to Petco to ask what might be the problem. I spoke with a girl working in the fish tank department as she said that my tank was probably going through a water cycle. I had no idea what a water cycle was! She explained that the water needs to build up bacteria to turn the fish poop into a different molecule that isn't harmful to the fish. It could take up to two to four weeks to cycle through to produce the correct bacteria and balance my water.

I thought this was so interesting. I had no idea fish tanks usually all go through this cycle. I had always thought the water would just stay clear because of the filter, but that's not the case. It's living bacteria responsible for the care and maintenance of my turtle and fish.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11931557791841923904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868312446745343657.post-18409402269703369552016-03-26T16:39:00.000-07:002016-04-30T11:50:31.052-07:00Week 10 Life Alfredo Sauce Recipe One of my favorite things learned in culinary school was how to make sauces. I feel like jarred sauces are too pricey, contain too much sodium and personally have me burping all night. Homemade sauce is, in my opinion, the best way to go for any tomato or cream sauces.

My friends wanted to make some pasta the other night, but they didn't have any sauce to use. I asked if they had milk and flour, since that's all you need to make a simple béchamel sauce. They did. Since they also had Parmesan, I made for them what I will present to you, Alfredo sauce.

The unfortunate thing about sauces is that it's hard to keep an even consistency. Working with milk is the tough part. Milk tends to scorch and especially when using a roux. It tends to break, milk solids separate, and it leaves you with powdery flakes of milk.

The recipe I'm using does not call for a roux. For a thicker consistency, make a quick blonde roux and let it cool on the side. I added it to the sauce in small increments, while stirring until a thick constancy is reached. Try not to make it too thick because the cheese thickens up the sauce. Make sure the sauce isn't too hot when adding the cheese. This could separate the milk solids in the cheese and leave gross white specks that ruin the sauce's beauty. I've ruined many sauces due to my impatience. Please, let it cool before adding the cheese.

If done right, you'll come out with one of the best sauce you've ever tasted. Plus, it's always impressive to make a sauce.

It's been re-tweeted more than 300,000 times, continues to be uploaded by YouTube influencers, and landed the two in an interview with Ellen. It has been remixed as a song and has

How did 14-year-old Daniel Lara and 15-year-old Josh Holz, make a their video viral? They piloted it.

1. Josh produced entertaining content staring Daniel as the lead actor.

2. The test audience was Josh's Snapchat followers and replys were feedback for their performance.

3. Premiering through YouTube, Damn Daniel went public and was distributed to Josh Holz and friend's Facebook platform.

Posting the videos to Josh's Snapchat, his friends became a network of encouragement and an audience to comment. The steady stream of views was analyzed as good feedback and the pair realized the success of their clips. They continued to produce content until perfected and then they debuted.
Ellen goes into detail about how the boys social media channels contributed to their success. I guess with the right tools, almost anyone could become a famous amateur director. In the first two chapters the author Katie Paine emphasizes how PR professionals need to maintain relationships in social media. Paine stresses that measurement isn't just the statistics that your social sites represent, but the relationships that are made with the customers that counts. Good relationships are key in gaining trust, which leads to sales and (hopefully) produces profits.

In order to understand how well a company is doing, Paine suggests to look at the competition and note their success. A strategy may be formed from competitive outlooks. Noting strengths and weaknesses on competitors social pages may help guide what will work for your own social pages.

I'm excited to be reading about measurement in PR. I hope Paine will touch on Google Analytics and some recent data tracking software that may help me in the future.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11931557791841923904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868312446745343657.post-22216108465847886092016-03-20T11:40:00.000-07:002016-04-30T13:17:15.013-07:00Week 9 LifeI love my turtle. I bought him after spring break and its been a learning experience ever since. I named him the oh so original name of Mr. T, short for Mr. Turtle. I believe he is a boy because his tail is a little longer. Once a certain age, if the tail is longer, it means the turtle is a male.

He is a yellow belly slider and is very aware of his surroundings. I take him out of his tank and let him walk around the room often. He seems to like the exercise. He is just a baby so I'd say he's no longer than 2 inches. I always have to wash my hands after I handle him, due to a risk of salmonella poisoning I may get from handling him.

I'm a little worried about taking him with me across the country. I think he'll be fine to be out of water all day, but just in case, I'll make sure to put him in some water in a to-go container when I stop to use the restroom. He seems like a healthy little turtle, so I'm pretty certain he'll be fine.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11931557791841923904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868312446745343657.post-88312202592715906952016-03-19T11:33:00.000-07:002016-04-30T13:17:44.868-07:00Week 9 PRI stumbled on a article shared by Hootsuite that discusses the hierarchy needs of social engagement. This is obviously a play on words about Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The new hierarchy chart has taken the same concepts that Maslow presents and turns them into relevant behavior an individual experiences when on social media.
The fields begin with the basic necessities needed to engage with others on social media. Although the information seems like common knowledge, the levels of need address a more complex matter. Human behavior online mirrors that of behavior in person. It may happen behind a screen, but behavior needed for interaction is still pretty similar to real life interaction.

The preface and forward were about how well the author has done in the past with measuring relationships. It was like a testimonial as to how well the author has done her job. This adds credibility to her name and shows how other professionals trust her. Any information I will read, seems to be backed up by this opening section. I feel like I can trust her opinion and what we will learn with the chapters to come. This week I had to record a podcast regarding social media. I've been listening to quite a few podcasts and those that are related to social media usually give advice or talk about news stories or changes in the field.

For my podcast I decided to give tips about blogging. Since our class is required to post multiple weekly blogs, I thought some advice might come to use for those wanting to up their views. Though the advice I give calls for some to totally revamp how they blog, I think this podcast will be helpful to even the most amateur bloggers.
So check out the link if u have some time and want to improve your blogging experience. Your view helps my grade and helps you learn a little more about blogging.

When I return home, I usually go out with friends, eat at nice restaurants and enjoy the missed company of my cat. This visit was a little different. Instead of celebrating being home, I was celebrating my graduation and leaving ONU.

I was a little disappointed that I didn't go see a famous dj or spend money I didn't have on gamble with friends, but I felt like my time was better spent bonding with friends rather than being entertained with them Having more time around my old house, cooking with family and sleeping in my waterbed (yes I have a waterbed) was a much more enjoyable time than I would have had dancing at Omnia.

I'm happy my time here in Ada is almost finished. I can't believe this is my last stretch away from home. Soon I will be back for good and this daily homesick feeling with subside. I'm so excited for it all to happen, yet somewhat sad my college career is finally over.

This week in Share This, our class learned about how social media maintains a company's values in order to develop strategic content to segmented audiences. Based on the platform, the social media site used must follow how the audience views information.

On Facebook, users keep in touch with friends and family by viewing posted material, LinkedIn allows professionals a means to connect on a professional level, Twitter keeps up with specific followers in real time through micro blogging, and Google plus is...still struggling.

Engaging with audiences on social media is not an easy task. Because we so often use sites we feel like pros and take little effort into creating meaningful content. We share irrelevant and advertisement heavy information frivolously without regard for the reader's interest or how they will access it.

By producing helpful and insightful information specific to a target market, brands, companies and communication professionals will reach more users and spend less time on wasteful content.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11931557791841923904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868312446745343657.post-72836662103524798132016-02-20T08:11:00.000-08:002016-02-23T15:32:36.361-08:00My Trip to Fahlgren Mortin<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">My Trip to Fahlgren Mortine
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">Heather sat me down and introduced me to three "Mortinites". <span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">I learned about the way their company operates and the content they produce. I was given a tour of the amazing facility. I learned about the company's casual culture and the different ways employees had fun.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">The most interesting part of my visit was learning how Mortine integrated their advertising and public relations departments to create a client engagement division. I always thought the two similar fields should merge and I guess Mortine thought the same.
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">I'm so thankful for all the encouragement and advice Heather gave me. It has motivated me to pursue an industry I love rather than the industry that's easiest. Her advise to reach out through LinkedIn to find industry leaders and get to know how their field works is something every networking professional should practice. I enjoyed my visit and would recommend any public relations or advertising professional to check them out.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11931557791841923904noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4868312446745343657.post-52748244197926016172016-02-14T08:47:00.000-08:002016-02-16T09:26:01.288-08:00Week 5 PR BlogI'm a PR major with a entrepreneurship minor. I like to think I learned a thing or two about both industries which is why I want to give a couple tips for startup owners.

There is some online discussion about whether a product or company should remain stealth before launch. I get it, some don't want to reveal the great mystery behind their craft and others are fairly modest in what they have created, but the confusion lies in the understanding of remaining stealth.

Remaining stealth is a good way to keep competitors from taking ideas and keeping the public at bay for a big reveal. Stealth is good but silent is not. Keeping silent may halt progress, create paranoia and spark mistrust.

Being silent keeps you away from events to promote your idea before its release. It keeps you from talking to the right people that can make your product happen. Keeping silent is counteractive if the great idea is kept out of the right hands. While one should never remain completely silent about an idea, one should also not brag about the idea as well. It's never a good idea to brag about an idea after a few too many cocktails at an industry event.

Sharing an idea before launch should be handled carefully and with the right people. Sharing with venture capitalists and investors could lead to cash flow or a court appearance. Although entrepreneurs hope for endorsements, many find themselves in court battling for rights to an idea they accidentally shared with the wrong unethical investor.

Be careful with who you share your idea with. Sharing is always a good way test the market and see if your produce means something to the public. It's also a good way to find people that can help you get to where you want to go. Have fun, be wary and most importantly don't give up!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11931557791841923904noreply@blogger.com0
